SENIORS SECURE TOP FLIGHT STATUS
Oct. 16, 2011
St. Joseph’s 0-9 v 0-10 Belcoo
Belcoo secured their Division 1 status on Sunday with a victory by the narrowest of margins in Ederney. Conditions weren’t great and the football on show wasn’t much better but both sides battled for every ball throughout and luckily for the visiting side they managed to come out on top in the end.
The sides were level on a number of occasions and at the interval they were locked a 0-5 each. Christopher Snow opened the scoring from a placed ball while Ciaran Flaherty and Shane McCabe knocked over points from play for Belcoo. Paul and Darren McCusker both found the target to put the home side into a 0-3 to 0-2 lead.
Midway through the half, Stephen Gallogley was unlucky to see his soccer style attempt at goal hit the underside of the crossbar and bounce out allowing the Belcoo defence to scramble the ball to safety.
Having had the better of the opening period St. Joseph’s should really have been further in front but some tame efforts and wayward shooting only seen them register two more scores before the break. Manus Maguire and Snow were on target. Having failed to turn much ball around the middle Belcoo did managed to break forward in the closing five minutes and hit three scores. Ciaran Flaherty and Philip Leonard knocked over good scores from play before Flaherty tapped over a 14yard free with the last kick of the half.
Upon the restart substitute Peter Gormley fisted St. Joseph’s in front again but Jonathan Feeley landed a good score from the left wing. Paul McCusker landed two excellent points with both feet with Shane McCabe and a 14yard Brian Cox free leveled matters at 0-8 each.
The whole second half was very stretched with both sides turning over the opposition on a number of occasions and setting up attacks. With the clock running down and the sides level Belcoo’s centre half back Eoin Leonard joined the attack and kicked a wonderful long range point. Belcoo opened up a two point gap when Feeley tapped over a close range free but Christopher Snow responded with a free to leave one point in it with 4minutes remaining.
Belcoo’s Brian Cox hit the post as Belcoo went in search of an insurance score but it was the defence of Belcoo who would win them the game for them as a number of blocks were made in the dying seconds ensuring they held on to win by a single point.
