Minor League Section A: Belcoo 2-6 v 1-4 Kinawley
Belcoo made it two wins from two in the Minor League Section A after a 2-6 to 1-4 win over Kinawley at home on Sunday. A strong crossfield wind ensured it was always going to be a low scoring encounter but Belcoo who dominated large periods of the game and squandered a number of scoring chances were in the end saved by goalkeeper Patrick Sweeney who pulled off two match winning stops late on to help secure victory.
Kinawley opened the scoring with a James Allen free kick after 2minutes but Belcoo hit back with a goal in the 5th minute. A long ball by Aaron Dolan was collected by Philip Leonard who turned and fired past Ben Owens in the Kinawley goals from 12yards.
Belcoo dominated possession over the next 10minutes but failed to register a score. Daniel Ray and Mark Corrigan were on top around the middle while Aaron Leonard was getting on plenty of ball. Kinawley were operating with Mark McTaggart playing a sweeper role to give Stephen O’Reilly support at full back and it was working well as Belcoo struggled for scores.
A Donnchadh Tierney point midway through the half reduced the deficit to one but Matthew McAloon fired over after good work from Aaron Dolan. The closing quarter of the half remained scoreless with both defences on top.
Aaron Dolan and Ciaran Melanophy traded scores early in the second half before Aaron Leonard rounded off an excellent move with a well taken point to push Belcoo into a 1-3 to 0-3 lead on 37minutes.
In the 43rd minute Belcoo fired in a second goal. A combination of Derek and Brian Furey turned over a Kinawley attack and Belcoo broke forward at pace down the right wing, the ball was past through the hands of a few players before it fell to Aaron Dolan who drilled a low shot into the net.
Kinawley however hit back with a goal for there own as Ryan Murphy broke through and bore down on goals. Patrick Sweeney made a fine save but the loose ball fell back into the hands of Murphy who made no mistake at the second attempt.
A Sean McManus point left the score 2-3 to 1-4 in Belcoo’s favour with 10minutes remaining. The home side had to thank Sweeney for producing two smart saves late on to deny certain goals and after surviving a few scary moments the defense regained controlled and turned over numerous Kinawley attacks.
In the closing 5minutes Belcoo finished strong as Philip Leonard, Aaron Dolan and Dean McDermott knocked over points to see them over the line after a hard working hour.
