U14s: Valiant Belcoo lose by 1point to Irvinestown
Mar. 3, 2012
Belcoo under 14s hosted Irvinestown on Saturday for their second game in the 2012 league. In a keenly contested encounter Irvinestown withstood a series of Belcoo attacks to hold out for a 1-8 to 2-4 win.
When the sides matched up prior to the throw in it was clear to see Irvinestown were physically stronger as this season the Belcoo side consists of several players all eligible for the U12s later in the year. After slow starts from both sides the visitors began to make better use of the ball and with the assistants of a strong wind they knocked over 4 quickfire points.
The pace of Irvinestown's Caolan Ward was causing problems while Jarlath Maguire and Oliver Hughes were on top around the middle. The Belcoo defense began to wilt as the visitors applied a sustained period of pressure and having kicked 4 straight points an error in the Belcoo rearguard gifted Irvinestown a soft goal to push them into a 1-4 to 0-0 lead on 23minutes.
Before the interval Belcoo registered their only score of the opening period. That score was to be a goal from a long range Conor McAloon strike. Daire Keaney had a wonderful opportunity for a second Belcoo goal moments later but the young forward fired wide. Irvinestown chipped over another point to leave the score 1-5 to 1-0 in their favour as the half ended.
Both teams missed early opportunities at the start of the second half before Belcoo began to take advantage of the wind. Like their counterparts in the opening period Belcoo hit 4 unanswered scores to reduce the deficit to one point. In this dominant 10minute spell Daire Keaney knocked over an excellent point. Gary Doherty slotted over a free after McAloon was brought down and Doherty added another with Andrew Ferguson hitting the fourth point.
With the minimum between the sides and the game up for grabs going into the final quarter it was Irvinestown who took a firm grip of proceedings. Three quick points against the stiff breeze seemed to have put the game beyond Belcoo however with only minutes remaining Belcoo hit the net.
Ciaran Flanagan finished off a neat move with a well taken goal to leave the score Irvinestown 1-8 Belcoo 2-4. The home side had four good opportunities late in the game to get the equaliser but they couldn't convert one. The best chance fell to Daire Keaney but his effort rattled the crossbar and was scrambled to safety by the Irvinestown defense as the St. Molaise men held out for the win.
It was an exciting end to an enjoyable encounter which was well refereed by Noel Davis. Next Saturday Belcoo travel to Lisnaskea.
