Juniors: Devenish Hammer Belcoo
Apr. 29, 2012
Devenish cantered to victory in this Erne Cup Division 1 fixture on Sunday evening as they racked up an impressive 1-15 to 0-3 win over Belcoo in Garrison. The home side had the wind advantage in the opening period and held a 7point lead at the interval however a lacklustre Belcoo showed little fight in the second half and Devenish continued to chip over points at ease.
In the opening quarter Devenish hit four points as Kevin Coyle and Jason Love both registered two each from distance. Belcoo’s Damian Holleran landed a good score from play but Devenish responded with the games only goal on 17minutes. The Belcoo defence was caught in possession and the turn-over ball was quickly fed into Conor Keown who drilled low into the corner past Patrick Sweeney.
Within a minute Sweeney was forced to make a wonderful save to deny Brendan Gallagher who, having beaten his defender, bore down on goals and fired towards the top corner. Over the closing minutes Coyle landed another from play before Darren Maguire tapped over a close range free. Holleran did manage to land a second Belcoo score, drilling over from distance to leave the score 1-6 to 0-2 in Devenish’s favour.
Upon the resumption Devenish continued to dominate every sector of the field and they cut through the Belcoo rearguard on several occasions. Ruairi Doherty, Eunan O’Flanagan, Kevin Coyle and two more Jason Love scores extended Devenish’s lead to 12points by the 45th minute.
Doherty and Coyle landed more points before substitutes Ruairi Maguire and Ciaran Mulrone also registered neat scores from play. Belcoo’s sole score in the second period again came from the boot of Damian Holleran.
For the winners Kevin Coyle kicked some fine scores throughout while Colin Burns at full back had a fine hour. For Belcoo Stephen Nolan worked tirelessly at wing forward but it in truth it was a bad day at the office from too many of the visiting players.
