May. 22, 2012
MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Derrygonnelly 3-13 v 3-5 Belcoo
Derrygonnelly pulled away in the second half of this Minor Championship encounter to secure their place in the next round as they recorded a 3-13 to 3-5 victory. Belcoo started brightly but a subdued opening to the second period seen a hungrier Derrygonnelly side open up an unassailable lead and run out comfortable winners.
In the first quarter Philip Leonard landed a free for Belcoo and Matthew McAloon hit the net but a brace of points from Gary McKenna kept Derrygonnelly within touching distance. Philip Leonard kicked a neat score from play to give Belcoo a 1-2 to 0-2 advantage before Leigh Jones took centre stage and rattled in 1-3 to give his side a 1-5 to 1-3 lead at the break.
Derrygonnelly and Leigh Jones in particular continued to impress early in the second half, the lively forward got himself a second goal and another point with Garvan Jones also registering a point as the Harps raced into a 2-8 to 1-2 lead. Two more Garvan Jones points increased the lead further before Belcoo got a scrambled second goal, ending a long period without a score.
The sides traded a number of scores over the closing 10minutes with Philip Leonard hitting 1-3 for Belcoo. Gavin Dolan got a third Derrygonnelly goal whilst Gary McKenna and Garvan Jones continued to chip over points.
In the end Derrygonnelly had done enough to see off the O'Rahilly's by 8points and advance into the Quarter Final.
