DEVENISH WIN ENTERTAINING DERBY BY THE NARROWEST OF MARGINS
Jun. 7, 2012
SENIORS: DEVENISH 1-10 v 1-9 BELCOO
In an entertaining local derby on a humid Wednesday evening in Garrison the home side managed to secure a one point win over Belcoo. This fixture followed a similar pattern to the encounter in early May with Devenish starting well only to see Belcoo battle back before the sides were level on a number of occasion in the second period.
Devenish got off to a great start as Jason Love pointed early before they struck their goal in the 6th minute. A long ball was broken by Kevin Ferguson into the path of Ruairi Doherty who fed the ball back to the on-rushing Ferguson to tuck into the net.
Belcoo’s response was an empathic one. Paul McGrath took a clean kickout and was fouled in the process, his quickly taken free kick set Shane McCabe through on goal, McCabe slipped the ball to Aaron Dolan who rifled a shot into the roof of the net past Paul Murphy. Jonathan Feeley clipped over a neat point to level the sides at 1-1 a piece with 10minutes on the clock.
Feeley landed a second score from play this time from an acute angle while Barry Mulrone added a free for the home side. Niall McGovern was having a fine half in midfield winning numerous kickouts and setting up attacks while McCabe was in possession countless times as Belcoo began to take a foothold in the game.
Feeley hit a good free after Stephen Maguire had been fouled before Ryan Dolan advanced forward from corner back to land a score from the right side. John O’Flanagan kicked a point on the stroke of half time to leave Belcoo up 1-4 to 1-3 at the break.
Upon the resumption Devenish split the posts first. John O’Flanagan tapping over a close range free to tie the game. A quickly taken McCabe free found Paul McGrath who fired over but O’Flanagan was again to target to leave the sides at 1-5 each.
The teams continued to trade scores as the game opened up and it became attack after attack. Stephen Maguire and John O’Flanagan knocked over frees before Terry O’Flanagan pushed Devenish into the lead for the first time in the second half. Ciaran Mulrone was on target to give Devenish a two point advantage with 8minutes remaining. 1-8 to 1-6.
Belcoo battled back with Feeley completing a neat move with a well taken score before Michael Leonard registered the score of the evening with the outside of the boot from the left wing. The sides were level again as the clock ticked down. Jason Love gave Devenish the advantage with his second score of the evening but Feeley drove in along the end line moments later to fist the equalising score.
From the kickout Belcoo recovered possession but Devenish turned over a Belcoo attack and drove forward, the ball found its way to John O’Flanagan on the left side and he made no mistake as he fired over from distance.
Belcoo had one last foray forward and a magnificent block by Martin O’Brien denied Niall Leonard a leveller but as Belcoo gathered the loose ball, Michael Leonard floated the ball into the square where Paul McGrath fielded but somehow fired wide on the turn and with that the refereed blew for full time and Devenish had secured a 1-10 to 1-9.
In truth it was an excellent spectacle with several passages of great football and as the game ebbed and flowed in the second period it was hard to call a winner. In the end though Devenish done enough to gather the 2 precious points on offer in what is shaping up to be a very tight league. Niall McGovern and Martin O’Brien had a great duel around the middle throughout while Shane McCabe was heavily involved in most of Belcoo’s attacks. Niall Leonard was again solid in defence for the visitors whilst Vinny O’Brien and Anthony McGuinness stood firm at the back for Devenish.
