WASTEFUL BELCOO SUFFER DEFEAT
Jun. 30, 2012
SENIORS: Roslea 0-10 v 1-5 Belcoo
Roslea picked up the victory in this Senior League Division 1 encounter but Belcoo will have left wondering how they didn’t take something from this particular tie. The O’Rahilly’s squandered numerous chances over the hour and ultimately paid the price for their wastefulness.
It took 7minutes for the opening score to be registered. Belcoo had already kicked 4 wides by this stage having begun brightly and restricted Roslea to very little of the ball. Stephen Maguire tapped over the score from a close range free however the visitors felt the foul should have resulted in a penalty. Seamus Quigley landed a similar free at the other end to level the game on 10minutes.
Roslea, who had struggled in midfield over the opening quarter, brought Seamus Quigley out to middle of the field and he made an immediate difference gathering kickouts and setting up attacks which yielded two points from the Lynch brothers Liam and Shane.
Belcoo hit back with the games only goal. The long ball into Stephen Maguire had been working well and Maguire broke the ball into the path of Philip Leonard who fired low into the net. Maguire registered from a acute angle having gathered a crossfield ball but two Seamus Quigley free kicks tied the game 1-2 to 0-5 by the 20minutes.
Niall Cassidy found the target from the right wing while Liam Lynch also landed a point from play on the counter attack. Belcoo continued to be wasteful in the final third but Stephen Maguire was able to kick another free before a surging run from Paul McGrath ended with a neatly taken score as the half ended level. Roslea 0-7 Belcoo 1-4.
The second period only yielded 4 points in total. Several early stoppages through injuries and treatment led to some intermittent spells of football. By the midpoint of the half Seamus Quigley and Stephen Maguire had traded free kicks.
Both sides continued to press forward but scoring was difficult in the slippery conditions. With 8minutes remaining Roslea struck two quick points, first from a Seamus Quigley free while Liam Lynch hit the second from distance.
Belcoo dominated the closing stages with wave after wave of attacks but some bad wides and poor shot selections lead to four glorious opportunities going begging. In the dying seconds of the game a 14yard free from Maguire was deflected wide by a defender on the goal line, the resulting 45 was floating into the square but the ball was fisted to safety by a defender and with it the referee ended the contest.

Elsewhere, Teemore picked up their first win of the season with a 1-12 to 1-8 victory over Devenish while run away leaders Lisnaskea recorded a handsome 2-10 to 0-4 win over Tempo.
