SENIORS: Belcoo 0-9 v 1-13 Derrygonnelly

Belcoo’s inconsistency in the 2012 Senior League continues as they fell to a 7point defeat at home to Derrygonnelly on Saturday evening having recorded a good win last week over Lisnaskea.

The O’Rahilly’s led by two at the interval and extended their lead to three before a goal for the visitors gave them momentum and the Harps finished the game on top, running out easy winners in the end.

The early exchanges seen the sides trade eight points. Ronan Ferguson got the opening score of the game before the Derrygonnelly full forward clipped over a score. Jonathan Feeley and Paul Ward tapped over free kicks before Feeley found the target from play.

By the midway stage it was three each as the lively Leigh Jones split the post. Derrygonnelly put together a neat move which game Paul Ward a sight at goal but the attacker’s attempt whistled just wide.

Feeley and Jonathan McGurn traded frees before Belcoo took command of the closing 10minutes. Patience attacking play led to a long range free which Feeley duly converted before the same player raced through and fisted his 5th score of the half to give his side a 0-6 to 0-4 interval lead.

Upon the resumption Paul McGrath landed a long range free to push Belcoo three clear but Derrygonnelly capitalised on a mistake and wiped out their opponents lead. A loose pass as Belcoo worked the ball out of defence was picked up by Declan Cassidy who fed Leigh Jones, the young attacked slipped in Ryan Jones who made no mistake when one on one with Paddy Sweeney, slotting the ball coolly into the right corner.

The Harps hit points from Ward (2) and Kevin Cassidy in the next 5minutes with Feeley again on target from Belcoo, this time from play. Leigh Jones pointed for the Harps with Paul McGrath responding with what was Belcoo last score on 48minutes. The score, 1-8 to 0-9 in Derrygonnelly’s favour at this stage.

Over the closing quarter Derrygonnelly took complete control of the tie. Ryan Jones came to the fore in midfield while any break balls were been picked up by the Harps. Kevin Cassidy, Ward, McGurn (2) and Leigh Jones all registered for their side as they secured two league points which sees them leapfrog Belcoo in an incredibly congested league table.

The league takes a break next weekend due to the Preliminary Round of the Senior Championship. Both these sides are in action next weekend as Belcoo take on Tempo on Friday in Kinawley while Derrygonnelly face current holders Roslea on Sunday in Brewster Park.
