Seniors Exit Championship
Jul. 29, 2012
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Tempo 1-14 v 2-7 Belcoo
Another first round exit in the Senior Championship for Belcoo as they suffered a 4point defeat to Tempo in Kinawley on Friday evening. The O’Rahillys inevitably paid for a disappointing and indisciplined opening period which saw them trail by 5points at the interval. Despite an improved second half showing from Belcoo, Tempo was able to keep them at a distance and hold out for a deserved win.
Tempo were quickly into their stride and a surging run from Niall McElroy through the heart of the Belcoo defence needed a fine save from James McGrath to deny the Maguire’s a dream start. It wasn’t long before Tempo had built up an impressive lead though. Dominating around the middle and feeding ball into their forwards, the Belcoo defence was under serious pressure.

Having to foul to halt the waves of attacks, Tempo’s Daryl Keenan punished each of these indiscretions kicking eight points from frees in the first period. By the quarter mark Tempo held a 0-7 to 0-1 lead.
Keenan and Jonathan Feeley traded frees in the early moments and that would prove to be the only time Belcoo were level with their opponents. Thomas Campbell fisted a point while Niall McElroy also notched from play but Keenan landed three more frees and a 45 to push his side into the six point lead.
Belcoo managed to register a much needed goal as the game was looking like running away from them on 17minutes . A loose pass in the Tempo defence was capitalised on by Declan Leonard, who jinked in on goal and slotted past Stephen Jackson.
Tempo responded with a Ryan Keenan point but Belcoo were enjoying their best period at this time and Stephen Maguire tapped over a free while Feeley chipped in from play to reduce the deficit to just two points 0-8 to 1-3 with five minutes remaining in the half. Three more defensive indiscretions lead to three more frees which Daryl Keenan duly slotted between the posts to see Tempo lead 0-11 to 1-3 at the break.
It was Belcoo, playing with the aid of a slight breeze who began the second period well, Ryan Leonard and Stephen Maguire points cut the lead to three but a soft goal hoisted Tempo six points clear. A tame Niall McElroy shot dropped into the square where the rangy full forward Thomas Campbell fisted to the net having beaten Niall Leonard and James McGrath high ball. 1-11 to 1-5.

To their credit Belcoo hit back immediately. After a goal mouth scramble the ball broke to Philip Leonard who’s shot at goal went through a number of legs before nestling in the bottom corner. Game on again 1-11 to 2-5 with 18minutes remaining.
Niall McElroy pointed from play while Stephen Maguire kicked a free for Belcoo. Three remained between the sides for a full 5minutes before Keenan landed another free, this time from the sideline. Feeley kicked a free for Belcoo and with seven minutes remaining it was a three point game. 1-13 to 2-7.

Belcoo squandered several chances in the closing period. Poor decision making whilst looking for goals when points would have sufficed at the time didn’t help the O’Rahilly’s cause. Tempo goalkeeper Stephen Jackson was forced to make a save from substitute Ian Corrigan but having had several chances to close the gap and failing, it was Tempo who registered the next score on the counter attack. Niall McElroy accounted for the point and with a four point advantage now secured Tempo played out time keeping possession from Belcoo.
