JUNIORS LET BIG LEAD SLIP
Aug. 4, 2012
JUNIORS: Belcoo 1-13 v 2-12 Derrygonnelly
Derrygonnelly looked dead and buried early in the second half in this Erne Cup Division 1 encounter as they trailed by 9points with 25minutes remaining but the Harps kept chipping away at the Belcoo lead and eventually reeled them in and collected the victory.
The Harps had begun well with Stephen Love on target twice while midfielder Cormac Glynn also knocked over a point. Belcoo had levelled by the 12th minute though with Aaron Dolan kicking two good scores from play and Damian Holleran also finding the target.
A deluge of rain fell during the remainder of the half and it was the home side that enjoyed the conditions. A period of total domination in sued for the hosts who picked up numerous break balls and applied constant pressure on the Derrygonnelly defence.
Damian Holleran hit a brace of points while Ciaran Flaherty also got on the scoresheet to push Belcoo three clear. Goalkeeper Ryan Farrell made a great save for Derrygonnelly and Flaherty should have got a goal on the rebound but blazed wide. A goal was to arrive only minutes later for Belcoo however, corner forward Jack O’Dolan squeezing the ball past Farrell from a tight angle.
O’Dolan fired over the next point for Belcoo moving them into a commanding 1-7 to 0-3 lead approaching the interval. Ciaran Flaherty kicked a free while Derrygonnelly managed the last score of the half when Love landed his third of the evening. Half Time: Belcoo 1-8 v 0-4 Derrygonnelly.
Belcoo had early points from Aaron Dolan and Nevan Higgins in the second half to open up a 9point advantage but a John McGurn goal 8minutes into this half kick-started the Derrygonnelly comeback. McGurn also pointed before a double from Peter Gallagher reduced the deficit to three.
An Aaron Dolan point briefly halted the Harps run but the visitors hit back with their second goal. This was a fortunate one, a Peter Gallagher attempt at a point hit the post, dropped kindly to John McGurn to punch to the net from close range. Substitute Garvin Dolan fired over moments later to tie the contest at 2-8 to 1-11.
Ciaran Flaherty and Gary McKenna exchanged points before Derrygonnelly took the lead for the first time in almost 50minutes. Garvin Dolan and Stephen McGuillion pushed the Harp two clear but a Nevan Higgins score reduced the deficit to one. Dolan drilled over his third point since his introduction and it proved to be the final score of the game although Belcoo’s goalscorer Jack O’Dolan had a glorious chance at the death to snatch victory but was crowded out by the Harps defence as he attempted to scramble the ball into the net.
