JUNIORS SECURE MUCH NEEDED WIN
Aug. 29, 2012
Belcoo Juniors picked up a narrow and much needed win in their league encounter with neighbours Devenish on Tuesday evening. A late free from Damian Holleran secured a 2-11 to 1-13 victory for the O’Rahilly’s who leapfrogged Roslea and Newtownbutler at the foot of the table.
Belcoo were wasteful early and rather unlucky also as Declan Leonard twice raced through on goals but his first shot hit the post and went wide with the keeper well beaten while his second effort five minutes later rebounded to safety via the crossbar.
Having squandered such chances in the opening quarter Belcoo had failed to register a score while their opponents had been more clinical in front of goal racking up four points. Brendan Gallagher, John Maguire and Gavin Gallagher among the scores.
Emmet Scollan advanced from wing back to eventually get Belcoo going but they suffered a further setback when a neat Devenish move ended with Gavin Gallagher finding the back of the Belcoo net. The visitors added a point to hold a 1-5 to 0-1 after 20minutes.
Belcoo would finish the half on top and would lead by the interval. The home side rattled off 1-6 without reply in an 8minute spell. Shain Gallagher, Aaron Dolan, Aidan McGrath, Seamus Conlon, Damian Holleran and Ian Corrigan all registered points with the latter also bundling a ball into the net from close range. Half Time: Belcoo 1-7 to 1-5 Devenish.
In the second half Devenish started brightly and had the lead after three straight points, Brendan Gallagher on the mark twice with Gavin Gallagher also landing a good score from long range. Shain Gallagher tied the game after a long run and finish but Brendan Gallagher was on top form with another two scores, both frees on this occasion as Devenish lead 1-10 to 1-8.
Ian Corrigan would land a telling score as he fired in his second goal of the contest 10minutes from time. Damien Holleran added a point and this see-saw game had Belcoo two points clear again.
Gavin Gallagher and Sean Treacy would point for the Garrison men but Nevan Higgins did likewise for the home team to keep them one ahead as the clock ran into added time.
Brendan Gallagher levelled the sides after a fine turn and point from the left wing before Devenish had a great chance of a goal as a loose ball was drawn upon by an attacker but defender Emmet Scollan managed to block the shot on the goal-line. Belcoo swept forward and when Seamus Conlon was fouled 20metres from goal, the hosts had the chance to kick a winning score. Holleran made no mistake with the free kick and Belcoo had won by the narrowest of margins.
