Match Report: Derrygonnelly 1-14 Belcoo 2-6
Jul. 6, 2009
Derrygonnelly 1-14 Belcoo 2-06
Belcoo's Emmet Scollan holds on as Noel Gallagher applies pressure.
Derrygonnelly produced a strong performance to deservedly pick up the points against Belcoo on Sunday.
The Harps recovered from conceding two goals midway through the first half to take a one point lead in at the interval and they managed to maintain their position throughout the second half although it was only in the final minutes that they finally put the game to bed with three late points securing the victory for the home team.
The result means that Derrygonnelly move into a mid-table position, one point behind Belcoo who in turn sit two points adrift of league leaders Devenish and Roslea.
The two goals for Belcoo gave them the better of the first quarter with the first arriving after 12 minutes from Christopher Leonard.
A high ball was not dealt with by the Derrygonnelly defence and Leonard claimed possession before turning to rattle a shot to the back of the Harps net.
And this was followed six minutes later by a second Belcoo goal with Stephen Maguire"s speculative lob evading everybody before nestling in the back of the net as Belcoo moved into a 2-02 to 0-03 lead.
Belcoo had points during this spell from Johnny Feely and Maguire while the Harps three points came from Johnny McGurn and a couple from Paul Ward.
It was Derrygonnelly though who dominated the exchanges to half time as they hit an unanswered 1-03 to take a one point advantage in at the break.
Paul Ward, who was the key figure for the Harps over the course of the game, banged in their goal, creating the chance himself by fielding the ball and skipping past a couple of defenders before planting a shot past James McGrath in the Belcoo goals.
With Ward, McGurn and Barry McGrath also lofting over points it put the Harps a point ahead by half time, 1-06 to 2-02.
Ward increased that lead to two points at the start of the second half before Derrygonnelly wing half back Niall Burns strode forward to fire over a score to make it a three point game.
Ronan Ferguson kept Belcoo in touch with their opponents, knocking over three points in the second half but with Ward (free) and Burns registering points for Derrygonnelly it was the home side who remained in front.
Noel Gallagher then strode through the middle of the Belcoo defence to clip over a score as the Harps edged three points ahead although Stephen Maguire went close to bringing the sides level when he got up to punch a ball goalwards. However, his attempt hit the top of the bar and went over as the gap was reduced to two points.
It was Derrygonnelly though who finished much the stronger with Johnny McGurn, who had an excellent second half at midfield, Ward and Declan Cassidy getting the scores that secured a five point victory.
