Match Report: Belcoo 0-12 Enniskillen Gaels 1-9

Box Score

Jun. 25, 2009

BELCOO 0-12 ENNISKILLEN GAELS 1-9

A converted Paul McGrath "45 earned Belcoo a share of the spoils against Enniskillen on Sunday evening.

A tightly fought contest looked to be going the way of Enniskillen after the excellent Aidan McCarron had nudged them ahead but McGrath"s well struck effort levelled the game, and indeed Belcoo pressed on in the ten minutes of added on time but they could not find a winning score with the game finishing in a draw.

It was the Gaels who held the sway by the end of the first half with a three point advantage, 1-04 to 0-04, with Daniel Keenan bagging the Enniskillen goal, although they were to play against the breeze in the second half.

Keenan hit the back of the net after seven minutes when Kevin Gunn"s long ball was collected by the corner forward and he finished to the roof of the net, giving James McGrath in the Belcoo goals no chance.

The sides then went on to trade scores over the remainder of the half with Stephen Maguire (pictured left) Belcoo"s main scoring threat throughout the contest.

Full forward Maguire knocked over three points for Belcoo in the first period with corner forward Johnny Feely also notching a point while Enniskillen had a point from McCarron as well as three points from frees from Tom Brewster.

It was Belcoo though who made the brighter start to the second half as they started to claw their way back. From the throw up Niall McGovern sent in a long ball that bounced over the bar and this was quickly followed by a point from play from half back Ryan Dolan.

The Gaels replied to this with a point from McCarron but increasingly it was Belcoo who were getting on top and with Maguire clipping over a free and Feely lobbing over another point as the home side managed to nudge themselves in front.

From this to the finish though the game swung one way then the other with both sides looking at different stages as if they may go on to win it.

Dolan and Maguire lofted over points for Belcoo while McCarron and a fine point from Colm Bradley kept Enniskillen in the hunt although the Gaels were to lose Niall McVeigh to a straight red card following an off the ball incident.

McCarron, who registered four of the Gaels five points in the second half, tagged on another two, sandwiching a Maguire free but then came McGrath"s converted "45 which meant the sides had to settle for a point apiece from the encounter.

The result leaves Belcoo joint top of an extremely close Division One, with the O"Rahilly"s level with Roslea and Devenish while Enniskillen are a further point adrift alongside Newtownbutler.
