Match Report : Tempo 2-9 Belcoo1-9
Aug. 6, 2009
First half goals decisive
TAKEN FROM THE IMPARTIAL REPORTER (06/08/09)
The winning of this game for Tempo was their first half performance as they managed to see off Belcoo 2-09 to 1-09.
At the break Tempo held a commanding 2-06 to 0-04 lead with Niall McCusker and Stephen Owens bagging the goals for the Maguires but the second half was to be a different story as Belcoo fought hard to claw their way back into contention.
Stephen Maguire led the way for the away side in the second half, the full forward notching 1-04, but despite being pressed hard, Tempo did enough to hold off the Belcoo charge and pick up the points. Daryl Keenan and Owens knocked over the opening points of the contest as Tempo took an early lead although Belcoo responded to this with a brace of scores from wing forward Ciaran Flaherty.
It was the home side though who were enjoying the better of the exchanges and they registered their first goal midway through the half, McCusker getting on the end of a high ball before planting it into the back of the net past Belcoo goalkeeper James McGrath.
With Keenan, Damien Kelly and Conor Meehan rattling over points the home side began to open up a lead although Shane McCabe and Stephen Maguire tagged on points for Belcoo.
However, as half time approached Belcoo moved into a comfortable lead as Owens found the back of the net to make it 2-06 to 0-04 at the break.
Belcoo needed to make a good start to the second half and that's exactly what they got as they clipped over three consecutive points from Maguire and Ian Corrigan before Maguire slotted the ball to the net after being set up by McCabe and Flaherty to make it 2-06 to 1-07.
Tempo though managed to keep their noses in front from this point with Kelly lofting over a couple of frees and Keenan scoring a point from play while at the other end goalkeeper Stephen Jackson did well to deny Ian Corrigan with John Carrigan failing to find the net from the rebound.
Maguire was again among the points for Belcoo before the end as they pushed hard for the goal that would have earned them a share of the spoils but it was not to arrive and Tempo held on to pick up the win.
