Productive weekend for the 9u Bandits

Box Score

Mar. 5, 2017

We had a great turnout for our community work day on Saturday, and accomplished a lot. I will have more on that later during the week, but many thanks again who came out to volunteer their time and labor to beautify our local fields. Sunday was reserved for baseball, and we continued an upward trend on the back half of the weekend. This came early and often in the first game, and we secured enough runs in game two to end the day 2-0. It isn't always pretty, and it isn't always ugly;  but we did get the end game results we wanted so we will take it and run.

We played the first game vs. the Carolina Monarchs. They are out of Union, SC. There is a lot of good baseball talent and coaching in the state of South Carolina, so we always know we have a test when we face these teams. The Bandits got hot early with the bats, though, and were fortunate to have eight runs after three innings. We were able to tack on ten more runs in the last two innings and closed out an overall good game as a team. Every last team member contributed to this win, which is always great to see. Defensively, we got some solid pitching from four players. Patrick Blee started this game and gave up no hits and no runs and had a strikeout. Zeke Pruitt pitched two solid, and had a strikeout. Brody Crawford and Walker Spargo also pitched an inning and each recorded a strikeout. We gave up four runs in this game, mostly from shaky defense due to spinning ground balls and lazy approach. It's very easy to get comfortable standing out in the field, and forget what play you're supposed to be thinking about and we had some of those lapses. That's why we practice, though, and hope to correct some of those issues.

Offensively we had several that made major contributions to the win. Luke Lassiter and Zeke Pruitt lead the offense in this game, both going 3-4. Luke had 2 singles and a double while plating a run himself. Zeke scored three times (!!!) and had 2 doubles and a single. Better than that was that he reached base FIVE times out of FIVE plate appearances, as he also reached via error and a walk. Landon King finished off the trio of offensive workhorses by going 3-3. Landon didn't do too much...just three doubles. I'm sure his favorite double of the three was the ground ruled double he got. Landon has really turned a corner hitting lately, and is more consistent with his approach and showing effortless swings at times that are exciting. Landon also scored two runs in this game. Those are the kind of offensive games we hope for every player, and a big reason we snatched this win.

Other players with hits and three times on base were Brody Crawford and Patrick Blee. Crawford also scored three runs. Walker Spargo, Aydan Bradley and Christopher Wurster all had multiple times on base and all plated at least two runs each as well. We were happy with this team win, and felt like we had a little momentum going into game 2.
