Game Two on Sunday offers hope for the future

Box Score

Mar. 5, 2017

We played a one-day only tournament this weekend because of our obligation to work in the community on Saturday. So, with only two games to play on the entire weekend, it was important that we secure two wins out of two games on Sunday. The second game was versus a team that is located in a hotbed of baseball talent and interest:  Weddington. We faced the Weddington Red Fire, and they were a tough out. They have a really good group of coaches and players, and played us tough the whole game. We didn't have a great day at the plate, but did match our good baserunning from game one in the second contest.  We snuck out of this game with a 12-1 victory, and we were happy to get out of Sunday with two wins.

Defensively we had some pretty nice plays. We had outstanding pitching from Landon King. Out of only three innings pitched, Landon had eight strikeouts, walked two and allowed no hits or runs. I am officially nicknaming him 'ACE' because he definitely is our ace pitcher. So, if you parents hear me calling him Ace, Ace Frehley or the Spaceman...I'm not being derogatory. Carsten Green caught a great game, and was a big reason why Landon had a good day, too. Bug is doing a very tough job, and it is great to see him excelling at such a tough position at this age. He threw two potential stealers out on great throws today. Patrick Blee showed his normal consistency from the mound, and tallied an inning giving up no hits, and only one run. We didn't play great defense that last inning to help him much, but we made enough plays to get out of the frame.

We had a modest day hitting in game two, and were lead by Luke Lassiter once again. Luke has been hot hitting lately, and continues to see beach balls out of pitchers hands. We hope it continues, because he has driven in and around a lot of baserunners these last couple of weekends. He also had a game best three times reaching base out of three plate appearances. Carsten Green was 2-3 with a ground-ruled double, single and scored two runs. Our apologies to Bug on the day, because he laced a ball down the left field line that got past the fence. The LF chased the ball to the second fence without raising his hands in the air....so Bug should've been allowed to keep running and get him an inside the park HR. The ground-ruled double was called though so his stop ended up being bus station second base instead of the HR. Aydan Bradley was 2-3 including two singles and scored a run. Brody Crawford slapped two singles, stole a base and scored a run. Walker Spargo went 1-2 but his hit was a big one. He had a bases clearing triple that was like a drink of cold water badly needed for the coaches. He also scored two runs in this game. We had seven players reach base twice out of their plate appearances in this game, so we had some consistent baserunners on and aggressively advancing. Landon King also stole a base. We are working hard on our baserunning, and it shows.

So, we end the day with two wins out of two games. We missed two of our players this weekend:  Dalton Skipper and Blake Hartness. We look to get them back on the field this week, and continue the preparation process together. The coaches are very happy with the effort and focus given in our games this weekend. We have seen some really tough, scrappy teams already this year. It's hard to keep racking up wins when you face these type of teams. We will take them one game at a time, though....and see where that leads us.
