Weekend record looks average, but play was not
Mar. 29, 2017
On day two of our weekend slate, we started with a big-hitting team, the GBG Copperheads. Another Lake Norman area team, they always show up to the park with a lot of talent and competitiveness. This game was a must win after losing to the Titans late Saturday, so the Bandits came out swinging and thank goodness they did because the Copperheads did as well. We got some solid efforts on the mound from Landon King and Patrick Blee. Blee came in to close the game out when it was needed. Landon kept his composure amidst a good looking bunch of hitters, and grinded through three innings to earn the win. We did well on defense for the most part, and removed a couple little mistakes we saw on Saturday in this particular game.
Offensively we had several guys with big days. Landon King had the biggest individual day at the plate for the Bandits, as he went a perfect 3-3 with 2 singles and one BIG HOME RUN. He scored two runs as well, but that HR was a beautiful sight. Patrick Blee looked to not be outdone, and slugged himself a HOME RUN, as well. Blee got on 2 out of 3 times and scored two runs also. Two over the fence home runs always make us coaches feel better, but nothing could beat the feeling those two boys had when they rounded third and saw their teammates at home plate and our fans going wild. Great game for those two guys. Other guys with solid games at the plate were Brody Crawford going 3-3 with 2 singles and a triple. Crawford scored 2 runs and got on base three times out of three chances. Bug Green also went 2-3 including a single and a double and accounted for 3 runs scored. Luke Lassiter had a nice double in this game, too. Overall we got the hitting back on track, and this was a fun game overall. The final tally was 15-6 in favor of the Belmont Bandits.
In game two on Sunday, we had to face the best team in the tournament: The Tega Cay Titans. Oh the joy to play the best team twice out of four games.....and amidst my sarcasm, make no mistake about it - we want to play those type teams. We sign up to play the best, and compete every pitch. You parents and supporters know by now that we don't shy away from the legit teams, competition and tournaments. We go find the best to play and we saw them twice this weekend.
The game for us was pretty good overall. Their coaches and players are as solid a group as you could ever run across, and our boys played the game well the second time seeing this group. 2-3 costly plays on defense made the difference, which is common in really well-played baseball games like this. You all will see more of that as these boys get older and continue playing top competition. We ended up losing this game 8-6, after leading for a large part of the game. It's a tough loss, but an honor to compete against a team like that. I think our boys recognize a little mistake here or there corrected means possibly a different outcome. Always good to have something else to work towards, and we will keep doing that.
Blake Hartness and Zeke Pruitt pitched a really good game for us in this contest. Both showed really strong command and gave hitters pitches to put in play. We didn't have too many walks in this game, and for the most part our defense played well. A couple spots here or there need work on, but we did have a lot of good plays in this game from the field. Offensively not one player had a huge game, but we had several consistent efforts. Bug Green and Walker Spargo had our big hits for the day- each with a double. We also had Luke Lassiter, Blake Hartness, Patrick Blee and Zeke Pruitt with a single each. On the weekend as a whole, Carsten Green was another top player for us hitting nearly .600 after four games. Their pitchers did a fine job, but Tega Cay's fielders robbed many "would be" hits from us on the day. We didn't hit the ball bad as a team, which was encouraging. We were close, but definitely no cigar in this one. So, we ended up 2-2 on the weekend, and we will lick our wounds and come back strong real soon.
