Silver Sunday is Blue

Box Score

May. 10, 2017

So, we got placed in the Silver Bracket for Sunday play in this tournament, and our group was determined to play up to their ability and make sure they left no doubt that we would compete as hard as we typically do in any game. We didn't do that exactly, but part of that was the Head Coach's idiocy showing with questionable pitching changes and other moves. We were set to face off against the Fort Mill Gators in game one.

Game one we won 11-1. Landon King was the star of this game, as he pitched 3 innings, striking out 5 and allowing only 1 run. The regular defense played pretty well for the most part. We had a big scoop by Blake Hartness at first in this game to secure a huge out, and other fine defensive grabs. King was really on with his pitching though, and attacked the strike zone early and often. Walker Spargo came in to pitch a nice one inning in the books, and finished off the game for us. Offensively we had King going 2-2 (2B, 3B and 1 run scored), Zeke Pruitt going 3-3 (1B, 2B, 3B and 2 runs scored), Patrick Blee hitting 1-2 (3B....with a throwing error that he scored on so nearly a round tripper) and Bug Green going 2-2 (1B, 2B and scoring 2 runs). We got up early, and scored consistently. We had a lot of good things happen, but we weren't tuned in as much as the coaches would hope as a whole. Luckily, Landon was tuned in and that is pretty much what we needed to get by this up and coming Fort Mill bunch. We ended up winning 11-1, with the game being called after the fourth inning.

Game two was effectively the championship game for the Bandits. We faced Elite 9u, but due to record and runs allowed/scored we would win the Silver Championship if we were able to beat this team. We have nothing but respect for this group of coaches and players. You can tell the teams who ask to not play this team or that team, and Elite obviously doesn't do that. They just show up and play. We play them often and it seems unfair to match us up every weekend like clockwork and never see other teams. I know this was a seeded Sunday game, but over the last two years we've seen them on Saturday plenty. They are tough minded, and keep coming to play so that garners a lot of respect from our side.

We had great pitching from Blake Hartness in this game. It was his best outing of the year. He pitched a solid 3 innings, striking out 5 and giving up zero runs. He was heavy handed in the strike zone, and threw with a little more zip than we've seen lately out of him. Whatever he ate that morning, I hope he eats it again the next time he pitches. Offensively, we had the whole team contribute good things. Leaders were Aydan Bradley with 2-3 (2B, 3B, 1 run), Brody Crawford 2-2 (2 singles, BB, 2 runs), Zeke Pruitt with 2-3 (2 singles, 3 runs), Carsten Green with 1-1 (1B, 2 BB, 3 runs) and Walker Spargo hitting 1-1 (1B, BB, 1 run). Like I said, everyone on the team did something good on offense in this game, which really contributed to our win and ultimately the Silver Championship.

Though we are happy to win any kind of Championship on a weekend, we sure hope to play in the Gold bracket next time. Baseball is a funny sport;  you can lose anytime to anyone. We don't think we are too good for the Silver, but we much prefer to play in the Gold against teams that match up a little better. There are different stages of teams. We are not at some teams level of play right now, just like other teams may not be at our level currently. I would love to start seeing matchups done like in the old travel days where the most successful teams were set to meet on Sundays based off of Saturday matchups made. It may be impossible to do with all the calls, requests and avoidances that go on these days. Congrats to the boys on their championship. It was a happy win Sunday, but a somber tomorrow as we attempt to get good enough to play in the Gold Bracket soon.
