Last regular season tournament

Jun. 14, 2017

We are looking forward to our last regular season tournament. We have qualified to play in late July, and will play in that invite only tournament but in the mean time this weekend's tournament will be our focus. We have had a few practices of late, and are beginning to wind down our tournament season. We have had a great run thus far this season, and expect to finish strong before our one month layoff.

We plan to practice about once a week during that month off between tournaments, and we understand that is not a whole lot but we account for our team's family vacations and other sports cranking up every year. We may lose a little baseball skill during this time, but we will have practiced over fifty times by that late July tournament, so we should be able to compete even if we are not at our peak when we play.

I would like to formally invite any local All Star team in the area (in NC or SC) to scrimmage us beginning next week. I know those teams want to get ready for their All Star games, and we are willing to scrimmage any 9 or 10u group around. If any of our parents or anyone else reading this know of a team wanting to scrimmage, please contact Kirk if interested.

Football season is right around the corner. Please make sure you sign up for Belmont Optimist Football if you have any interest in playing the sport. Pop Warner is still the safest youth organization to play football with, and if any of the experts want to have a conversation about pros/cons of playing different sports throughout the year - please let me know and we will speak. We do not encourage our baseball players to play year round for a multitude of reasons. If you do an un-natural motion (like throwing a baseball) for too much, for too long throughout the many years you are likely to have trouble with shoulder/elbow/arm in the future. Being on a baseball team and learning new or falling back into bad habits can make you a worse baseball player...and that happens a lot. There are thousands of baseball coaches around, and unfortunately many at the youth level are pimps without the gold teef. They know what you want to hear, they tell you what you want to hear, and they snare you. The 10 seconds of pride you feel for your child being talked up isn't worth the game that is being played upon you. If you don't play football, go play soccer or lacrosse. Give baseball a break. This great game will be here when you come back, and if the player practiced and played the right way......your child should be ready for a break from it.

In between June and July tournaments, we will have an open tryout for anyone that can prove they should be on our 9u team. We do not recruit other teams players like so many other coaches do around here, but all are welcome to come try out of your own volition. I have said from day one, and will continue to say it privately and publicly - we are trying to make the best 9u baseball team we can make from one year to the next. We are looking for the best players who fit our team as well. We are looking for good new players to add every year;  our current players "try out" during the course of the year, so we have seen what they can do plenty. This is an opportunity for others to show what they can do and get a chance to make our team if they want to try. This is not a popularity contest, and our team is not a social club. We have holes/needs that we need to fill, and are looking to do so. We are simply a travel baseball team. Updated info will be released about this tryout on this website, on Facebook and on individual communications for all those who have contacted me throughout the last year or so. But, as of right now, we will be holding a two-day tryout on Wednesday June 21st and Thursday June 22nd at Boat Club Road from 6-8pm for players not currently on the team. If you have one bad day out of the two day tryout, you get another day to show better. Day 2 may include a scrimmage. There will be drinks/concessions available.
