Rust is the color of day 1, 2018 season

Feb. 27, 2018

We played two games on Saturday, and came away victors in both contests. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see many balls in play for our defense to prove their worth but our pitching was pretty solid throughout the day. Hitting was spotty, but we did manage to drop a couple in past, around and through defenders along the way which helped propel our day to a 2-0 start.

In game one we had Team Carolina. Zeke Pruitt pitched a strong two innings capturing five strikeout victims, and was followed up by Mason Wells shutting down the opponent throwing a solid inning and netting a strikeout. Chris Wurster, Aydan Bradley and Pruitt led the offensive charge with 2 hits each. The Bandits wound up with a 16-1 victory, and started the season off right.

In game two we played the 10u Battalion baseball team. We sort of sleptwalked through this game, and I guess it was partly due to the outstanding pitching that was happening. Blake Hartness went four innings and struck out 10 batters, allowing no hits or runs. Landon King came in for the last inning and notched two strikeouts against three batters. The Bandits didn't commit any errors in the field, but there also weren't a lot of chances either. That's a good thing in baseball, and our defense was definitely farther ahead than our offense was in this game. We did steal a bunch of bases and advanced on passed balls/wild pitches during the contest, so that was encouraging. Our baserunners were alert, and made the most of their opportunities for the most part.

Offensively in this game we didn't light up the scoreboard but Landon King did his best to energize our group by smashing an over the fence home run. In this game, he had two hits overall leading the team. Zeke Pruitt also knocked two hits in this game helping our anemic offense along. We had plenty of dropped balls, misplays and errors that allowed some baserunners for our offense. It is always good to put the ball in play, but we knew the team needed to hit the ball harder into play on day two to be able to compete a little better. We ended up winning by an 8-0 margin against a solid team, and it was a good reminder that we need to string some consecutive hits together in order to be able to finish off games in controlled fashion.

Day two was coming soon, and the meal after the game was a little more enjoyable than our offense on day one. Maybe our full bellys would produce a better mindset and offensive effort on Sunday?? We would have to wait about eighteen hours to find out.
