First regular tournament of 2018 was a success

Box Score

Mar. 5, 2018

Well now we can say the boys have played in Maine. The wind and cold that we played both games on this Saturday was frigid. The boys did a great job of handling the elements and getting down to business. We came out roaring in game one on offense, and ended up using six pitchers to get through the game and the conditions. The coaches were really proud of the boys for their efforts, and lack of excuses. They knew we were there to play, and all teams had the same conditions to compete in. The first regular tournament of 2018 including seeding was underway in sunny Cornelius, Antarctica.

We had 10u ACES - Hartsell up in this first game. They had a good squad, with a bunch of good attitudes and coaches doing a great job. They competed until the end, and we felt fortunate to get out of this game with all digits still intact and the win. We had an offensive star on the day and his name is Blake Hartness. Blake was a top hitter of ours, and hit a slump the latter half of last season. Never one to complain, he rolled up his sleeves and was as dedicated as anyone we saw at the facility this winter getting some hitting work in and it has shown brightly thus far eight games into the season. Blake went 2-4 on the day, and reached base three times overall. Blake had four RBIs as well, but the most impressive part about his offensive day is that he slugged TWO Home Runs in this one game. Both shots went over the left field fence, and hit a driveway into the park and bounced up a hill on the other side of the drive. Both shots were high and far, and oh so sweet. Hard work and persistence pays off, and it couldn't happen to a better boy and teammate.

We had plenty of offensive fireworks in this game. We ran the bases really well as a team. Chris Wurster, Blake an Brody all had two hits in this game. Brody included a double in his effort, and provided three RBIs. As a team we didn't collectively hit it great;  the conditions and a little bat envy may have contributed to that. Once you see your teammate hit two home runs, you want to get into the act as well. Luckily Landon King ended this game with a walk off double scoring the final run so we could put this one in the books, and go find a place where toes could thaw out. Blake Hartness pitched a great first inning this game, and we scattered five other pitchers throughout. It's always good to have some time on the mound. At ten years old, these guys get a lot of chances to have success and more importantly fail. They learn plenty from those failures, and it gives us an opportunity to adjust and come back stronger the next time out. We won this game 19-10, and were happy to be done with it.

The second game of the day was against LKN Hurricanes 10u. They have a great tandem staff, and a good team. They will make some noise this spring and summer. We had a strong pitching and baserunning performance from our guys in this game as well. Walker Spargo, Landon King and Aydan Bradley lead the way with two hits each. Landon King had two doubles on the day, and Aydan contributed one double. We started getting into an offensive flow in this game, and our bats were starting to come alive as a whole a little more.

Defense didn't get a whole lot of chances in this game, and it was due to the great pitching we had going on. Zeke Pruitt was on fire pitching, and mowed down six batters in two innings of work. That's about as good as you can pitch around these parts. Not to be outdone, Blake Hartness came in and pitched 1 2/3 innings and struck out five. So...here again - really strong pitching effort that helped spark our offense and ultimately win us the game 10-0.

What a great day and start to our season this weekend. We rode into day two (Sunday) with a number 1 seed, and felt good about our chances.
