It was a good start to the season for the Chandler Wolves Cross Country squad. Despite battling the heat and sunshine all morning, there were still a number of personal bests run throughout the meet. The girls freshman team ended up 3rd overall, led by Ava Hamilton who won the race in a blistering 19:38 to register the 5th fastest time of the day by any girl on the course.
The Sophomore boys had a good outing led by Mason Leon and big PR's by Jay Depler and Cameron Allen. Depler finished over a minute ahead of his time from last year while Allen beat his time by over 30 seconds.
The Junior girls were led by Alexis Nichols who finished first overall in the race by running a strong last mile after sitting behind the leaders for the first two miles of the race. Marlee Coolidge and Brianna Smith both had strong runs for the junior girls and Coolidge bested her time from last year by over 1 minute. Michael Gonzales got out for a fast first mile and hung on for 13th place overall in the boys race. His time of 17:30 was 1:03 faster than he ran at the Chandler invite last year.
The Senior girls had three first time cross country runners competing and they all ran very well. Sam Miller led the way in 32nd place followed closely behind by Verenise Munoz in 33rd with times of 23:12 and 23:22, respectively. Mark Kapron was the lone senior boy and ran a tough race, despite not running for the past two weeks due to injury.
AZ Milesplit runs a feature called "Cross Country Watchlist". It features all the top returning runners from across the state as we head into the upcoming Cross Country season. Chandler's own, Alexis Nichols, was selected for the feature. You can read her interview at the link below:
