Oct 8, 2014 - Desert Twilight XC Festival

The biggest meet of the season so far for the Chandler Wolves seems to have brought out the best in them. Almost every athlete that competed in the meet ran a new personal best. With the temperature starting to cool and the sun setting over the course, it was a great atmosphere for competing under the Friday night lights.

The open girls race saw Brianna Smith lead the way for the Wolves and she was followed closely behind by Alyssa Manzo and Katherine David who had huge seasonal and personal bests. Essence Gastello also improved her PR by just over 5 minutes for the 5km distance.

In the Boys open race, Conner Hinsch, ran 18:49 to set a big PR and dip under the 19:00 minute barrier for the first time. Jay Depler and Mark Kapron also ran strong races for the boys as they cut 35 seconds and 1 minute and 35 seconds, respectively, off their previous bests.

The final race of the night that had Wolves competing was the girls Championship section. Without a couple of top runners who were out of state for soccer tournaments, the Chandler squad needed some other girls to step up to fill the void; and step up they did! The entire team of seven girls had massive seasonal and personal bests. Up front, Alexis Nichols and Ava Hamilton worked their way through a very competitive field to finish 3rd and 4th overall, respectively, in times of 18:48 and 18:50. Sam Miller cut 2 minutes off of her previous best and Verenise Munoz cut 1 minute and 40 seconds off her time as they ran 21:14 and 21:42. The 5th scorer for the Wolves was freshman, Lanie Hindenes, who was getting her first taste of varsity action. Hindenes, ran a fantastic race for her first time up with varsity and ran a PR of almost 2 minutes, crossing the line in 22:39. Helen Urho and Marlee Coolidge also cut more than 1 minute off their old personal bests to cap off a great day for the Chandler Wolves. The girls team finished 9th overall in the championship section which was full of many good teams from in and out of state.

With this performance, the Wolves should be full of confidence as they head into the last stretch of the season. They will have a final tune up meet with Red Mountain, Mesa, and Westwood on Wednesday, October 15th before the Chandler City Championships which will take place on Thursday, October 23rd.

Sep 30, 2014 - Doug Conley Invitaional Results/Recap

It was another hot day in the early fall desert, with temperatures approaching 90 degrees at race time. The open girls section kicked off the meet for Chandler High, as freshman Melanie Hindenes was the schools top finisher on the very challenging course in a time of 25:28.22. Brianna Smith wasn't too far behind as she crossed the line at 25:51.88.

The next race featuring Wolves runners was the Varsity boys section. Senior, Conner Hinsch, ran a great race to set a new 5k PR in a time of 19:15.20. He improved on his time from Ojo Rojo by 40 seconds on a much more difficult course. Jay Depler, sophomore, was the second man for the Chandler squad, as he finished the course in a time of 21:14.54; his second best ever.

The last race of the day for the Chandler Wolves was the prestigious Doug Conley "Elite" Invitational section which features many of the top teams in the state. After their performances the past couple of weeks, the girls team was given the opportunity to test themselves against many of the premier teams in Arizona. It was a very good showing for the girls team in their first big test of the season. They finished in 10th place overall with 5 of the top 6 teams from the state championship race last year finishing ahead of them. They also beat a top 10 team from a year ago as well as several other state championship qualifying teams. Junior, Alexis Nichols, led the way for the Wolves in 14th place with a time of 20:14.59. She was followed closely by teammates Gabby Enns and Ava Hamilton who were 20th and 27th, respectively, in times of 20:27.54 and 20:46.88. Sam Miller and Verenise Munoz rounded out the top 5 for the team score.

Up next for the Wolves will be the Desert Twilight Invitational on Friday, October 3. The meet will feature a number of the top teams in the Southwest. It's a fast course, so be on the look out for some new PR's!
