Miscues Foil Cougars
Apr. 28, 2017
A series of baserunning blunders and defensive miscues led to the Cougars' demise last night at Holcomb Field in their loss to Caroline. A half dozen outs given up on offense and four costly errors on defense helped the Cavaliers hold on to win, 7-6.
Solid pitching kept the Cougars within arms-reach all evening long. Senior righty, Brandon Haynes (1-1, 1 S) started and suffered the hard-luck loss. Haynes worked four innings, allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits while striking out nine and walking three. Sophomore, Patrick Millner tossed the final three frames allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three and walking four.
At the plate, junior left fielder, Ryan Lee went 1-4 with a solo homerun to lead off the sixth inning. Lee scored three runs on the night for the Cougars. Juniors Luke Harvey, Stephen Bowen, and seniors Patrick Caiafa and Brandon Haynes each had a hit and an RBI.
The Cougars fall to 5-5 overall on the season, 1-3 in the Battlefield District, and 1-3 in Conference 19 play. They travel to Culpeper on Saturday, April 28 for an 11:00 am start against the Blue Devils.
