RAVENS BLUE HOLD ON AGAINST WOLVES TO CAPTURE DIVISION TITLE!

Box Score

Jun. 2, 2015

Saturday, May 30 - On a muddy, wet Heritage Soccer Park field, the U11 Freebird Ravens Blue took on the U12 FCKC Wolves.  At stake was the U12 Division 3 title, and the Ravens showed early on that they were primed and ready.  Bolting to a 2-0 halftime lead, the Ravens Blue had to hold on against the Wolves in a wild second half.  In the end, they held on for a 2-1 victory, giving the Ravens Blue the division championship!

The Ravens started out strong, generating several scoring opportunities, and defensively, locking down the FCKC attack.  AllieRiese, GabbyAlex, and goalkeeper Brianna were rock solid in the back, despite the slippery footing.  Up front, Jayme was strong and skillful with the ball as usual, while Jericho threatened the defense with her speed and slick ball skill.  Jordan was her usual frenetic and speedy self, and up at striker, Taylor H continued her tremendous late season play.  Midway through the half, Taylor H received the ball up on the left side, and then took a slight touch to her right.  She then hit an incredible shot to the far post, as the ball soared into the upper right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.  What a spectacular goal by Taylor H!

Despite attempts to get it moved, this rescheduled game between the Ravens Blue and Wolves conflicted with Coach Duke's Freebird Hawks Blue game against Kansas Rush Academy.  Thus, just before halftime, Coach Duke had to leave the Ravens sideline to go coach the Hawks game. However, as he was making his way over to the other field, he called on Alex to take a corner kick for the Ravens.   She stepped up and hit a cross that was deflected out of bounds for a second corner kick.  On the second kick, she lofted a beauty into the middle of the goal.  Abby K crashed in and took it out of the air with a shot towards goal.  Unfortunately, the ball was blocked slightly by a Wolves defender, but Kiki was there to follow with a toe poke into the goal, giving the Ravens Blue a 2-0 lead.  Standing behind the goal, Coach Duke pumped his fist and then moved on, as the Ravens celebrated a fantastic goal!  Coach Dave graciously stepped in and led the Ravens Blue from that point forward, as they went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Coach Dave often talks about his disdain for a 2-0 lead, primarily because it's such a precarious lead for a team.  Had the Ravens gotten that 3rd goal early in the second half, the game may have been essentially over.  But the Wolves came out fired up, and the Ravens Blue failed to match their intensity.   Once FCKC broke through and got a goal to cut the lead to 2-1, their confidence was soaring.  The Ravens had their chances to increase their lead, including a breakaway attempt by Taylor H that just went wide of the goal.  The Wolves had their chances to tie the lead as well, as they hit the crossbar 2 or 3 times with shots, and Brianna stepped hard to force a one-on-one attempt wide of the goal.   When the final whistle sounded on a 2-1 victory for the Ravens, it was more 'relief' than an actual celebration for the team.

However, aside from Allie and Jericho (who had to run to join Coach Duke with the Hawks), the Ravens Blue did find time to celebrate a worthy accomplishment.  Before the season, Coach Duke thought that if the girls played to their ability, the Ravens Blue would finish on top of the division.  They did just that, finishing with a 6-1-1 record and ending the season as Division Champs!
