FALCONS COOL OFF THE RED HOTS 5-2!
Apr. 27, 2012
Sunday, April 22 - Nobody really likes early Sunday evening games...especially on the road. But the Falcons showed tremendous focus as they traveled to Lee's Summit to take on the LSSA Red Hots. Knowing full well they have a history of playing poorly against the Red Hots, the Falcons were determined to jump on them early, and with the help of a stiff, cold breeze, they did just that. The Falcons put together their most impressive half of the season, jumping to a 5-0 halftime lead, and then holding on for a 5-2 victory.
In an effort the change things up offensively, Coach Duke moved some of the forwards into different positions. It worked early on, as Reese sent a sweet pass to Courtney at the top of the box. Playing mid-forward, Courtney then dribbled around the defender and right at the keeper, sliding it past her to make it 1-0. It was an excellent drive by the strong-legged Courtney!
She wasn't done, however. She was called on to take a free kick just outside the box on the right side of the field. She launched a blast high and hard off the keeper's outstretched hands to make it 2-0 Falcons.
Kendall was next, as she jumped into the mid-forward position and picked up where Courtney left off. She took the ball, moved deftly up into space, and then hit an absolute bomb into the right corner to make it 3-0. She then set up the next goal, as she created in the middle and pushed the ball ahead to Alivia. Alivia took the pass on the run, dribbled ahead of the Red Hots defender, and ripped a shot into the goal to make it 4-0.
Getting into the act next was Reese, who took a pass on the wing from Courtney. The talented lefty forward then made a sharp cut on her defender, drove to the goal, and whipped a shot to the far post corner to put the Falcons up 5-0. What a clever bit of ball skill by Reese!
Meanwhile, the Falcons defenders shut out the dangerous and speedy Red Hots forwards, led by Kirsten, Karli, and Ellie. Kirsten made some excellent passes up to her forwards, including one that eventually led to Alivia's goal. Karli stepped up and stuck the Red Hots forwards hard, while Ellie recovered in great fashion on one play to stop a Red Hots forward from shooting at close range. In goal, Caroline was solid, coming out once to stop a threat near the top of the box. And with the wind behind her, she absolutely boomed her punts!
In the second half, with the wind behind them, the Red Hots made more of a push up the field. Their speedy and talented forwards eventually broke through, as they scored a couple of goals to cut the lead to 5-2. But overall, the Falcons hung tough as the Red Hots only outshot them by a 5-3 count in the second half (while in the first half, the Falcons outshot the Red Hots 11-3).
Overall, it was an excellent win, as the Falcons played a very strong game against a past nemesis. The Falcons now look forward to their first tournament of the season as they travel to Shawnee, KS for the Challenger Cup.
