Oct 14, 2012 - HSA U15 Round Robin at Gardner Field!

HSA U15 Round Robin at Gardner Field!

I can't imagine of a more miserable night for the parents, or a more fun night for the kids!  A big Thank You goes out to those who provided the Cheetahs with the beach umbrella and tent!

In the 6:30 match, the Cheetahs and the Fire played to a 2-2 tie.  After the Cheetahs jumped out to a 2-0 lead at the half, the Fire fought back, through the constant rain, with 2 of their own to earn a 2-2 tie!  I was glad to see the Fire end their season long losing streak!

In the 8:30 match, though the Cheetahs pounded the goal constantly, the Cheetahs were down 1-0 at the half and 3-0 at one point in the second half.  The Cheetahs continued to dominate the ball offensively and finally scored twice to make the final 3-2.  Shots on goal had to favor the Cheetahs 4 or 5 to 1, but the Galaxy goal keeper kept rejecting the shots!  If we had the full 70 minutes (instead of 50 minute games) I'm sure the Cheetahs would have scored more.

The Cheetahs, as always, played their hearts out!  I hope to see every one of the "Fall 2012" Cheetahs back as "Spring 2013" Cheetahs!

Oct 6, 2012 - Best Loss Ever?!

Best Loss Ever?!

On a cool but sunny afternoon at Emory Adams Field 2, the HSA Cheetahs were outscored 5-2 by the Riverdale United.

Riverdale jumped out to an early lead on a corner kick and led 3-0 before the Cheetahs countered with two goals of their own to make the score at the half 4-2.  A defensive battle ensued in the 2nd half as the United scored once and the Cheetahs were held scoreless.

The Cheetahs dominated possesion of the ball the 2nd half of the first period and most of the 2nd.  The early 3-0 deficit was just too much to overcome.

Over the years, my teams have never beaten a Riverdale team!  My 7-1 Spring 2010 Cheetahs only loss was to Riverdale 5-2.  My Fall 2010 Flag City Classic Tournament 2nd place team was shut out by Riverdale during the season 5-0.  My Spring 2012 Cheetahs lost twice, 9-0 and 5-0 to Riverdale teams.  Even my 10-1 U10 Girls "Stingers" only loss of the season was to Riverdale in the VanBuren Tournament!  I'm used to losing to Riverdale teams, but the effort that this Cheetahs team put forth was awe inspiring!  If you had missed the first ten minutes, you would have thought the Cheetahs won.  The Cheetahs dominated the United for three quarters of the game!  After the first ten minutes, most of the game was played in the Cheetahs attacking half of the field!   We kept the attack on and kept the pressure on!  I've never been more proud of a team!

Practice Monday and Wednesday as usual to get ready for the season ending HSA U15 Round Robin at Gardner Field Saturday evening!

Oct 4, 2012 - That's the Way You Do It!

That's the Way You Do It!

On a perfect evening for soccer at Emory Adams Field 2, the HSA Cheetahs dominated the second half and came up big with a 7-2 victory over the Liberty Benton Eagles.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead on a long shot that cleared the Cheetah's goal keeper's out-stretched hands and landed in the back of the net.  The Cheetahs fought back to tie the match, then take a 2-1 lead into the half.  The offensive explosion started in the second half, as the Cheetahs scored 5 more goals to the 1 late goal by the Eagles.

"Keys to Success" Recap:

Play as a team -- Achieved - the teamwork both attacking and defending was the best of the season!
Score Goals -- Achieved!!!!!!!

We have a match Saturday at Emory Adams Field 2 against the always tough Riverdale United to end our BSSL schedule.  Then it's time to get ready for the HSA Round Robin the following weekend!

Sep 29, 2012 - Flag City Classic Saturday Results

Flag City Classic Saturday Results

The HSA Cheetahs were outscored twice today in the Flag City Classic Tournament at Emory Adams.

On a wet and cold field at 8:00 AM, the Celina U15 Girls team took an early 2-0 lead and extended that lead to 5-0 at the half.  The Cheetahs regrouped for the second half and only allowed two more goals.

In the second match of the day, at 1:00 PM, the Bluffton Red Pride scored once in the first half, and once more in the second half to outscore the Cheetahs 2-0.

In the Blue Division championship game at 4:45 PM, the Bluffton Red Pride came back from a 3-0 deficit at the half to defeat the Celina U-15 Girls 4-3.

The Cheetahs were at somewhat of a disadvantage with our draw for the tournament.  The Celina girls were heading for Findlay and getting pumped up for the game before the Cheetahs even got out of bed, and it showed in the first half.  The second game was against a fresh Bluffton team playing their first match of the tournament at 1:00 PM!  Wow, what a draw for them!

On a positive note for the Cheetahs, we held the Red Pride to just 2 goals, half the goals that the Celina team allowed them and in both games, the Cheetahs never gave up!

The U15 Championship Match is at 1:00 PM Sunday at Gardner Field.

Sep 22, 2012 - Time to Regroup!

Time to Regroup!

On a chilly afternoon with the threat of rain looming overhead, the HSA Cheetahs were outscored 6-2 by the Van Buren Black Knights in Van Buren.  The Cheetahs took an early 1-0 lead and dominated the Black Knights in the first half, except for allowing three unanswered goals on balls that were not cleared from the danger zone.  To start the second half, the Black Knights scored 2 more unanswered goals before the Cheetahs scored again midway through the half.  A late VB score ended the scoring.

 "Keys to Success Recap":

1. Clear ball from Danger Zone -- Needs Work!!  We cannot keep trying to dribble or pass out of danger and be successfull!  A long clear allows our forwards and mids to stay on the attack.  A clear out of bounds allows our defense to reset.
2. Use the sidelines and work the ball deep on attack -- Achieved Somewhat. The sideline is our 12th player.  It usually provides an open lane for attacking and defensively, it stops play and lets our defense reset when our numbers are down around the ball.
3. Play smart. Look for open passing lanes, play the ball back if you can't go forward. Provide support on the attack. -- Needs work; need to play ball to open attackers or into space sooner.
4. Communication -- Getting better. I heard the most talk so far this season.

I believe this Cheetahs team is the most talented group of individual players I have ever had on one team.  This week, as we prep for the Flag City Classic Tournament, my challenge is to figure out how to make these individuals play as a TEAM.

Sep 18, 2012 - That's How You Play Soccer!!

That's How You Play Soccer!!

On a cool, breazy evening in Van Buren, the HSA Cheetahs outscored the Van Buren Crew 2-1.  With an opportunistic attack and a relentless defense, the Cheetahs built a 1-0 lead at the half and opened the margin to 2-0 early in the second half.  The Cheetah defense shut down the Crew's attack allowing their only score on a penalty kick for a hand ball.

 "Keys to Success Recap":

1. Clear ball from Danger Zone -- Acheived!!
2. Use the sidelines and work the ball deep on attack -- Achieved Somewhat.  We need to continue working the ball deep to allow the defense to move up to keep the ball deep.
3. Play smart.  Look for open passing lanes, play the ball back if you can't go forward.  Provide support on the attack. -- Needs work; need to play ball to open attackers sooner.
4. Communication -- Getting better. Keep working on it.

Soccer at a higher level is played as a defensive sport, and the Cheetahs defense played it very well tonight!
