In depth Q&A with Brooke Andrus
Sep. 13, 2017
University High School Junior Brooke Andrus goes in depth with her preseason and upcoming high school season.
Indy Magic: How have preseason workouts gone so far?
BA: Preseason workouts have been strong. Every time I get to come in and get better with the people I love surrounding me it makes me very happy to be part of the Magic family. We just started, but just from the first few workouts I can tell there’s a new attitude in the gym. Everyone is more determined and even more supportive of one another. It’s safe to say my last season is going to be bittersweet.
Indy Magic: Being at a new school on a new team how have you adjusted from the summer to now?
BA: Adjusting is a difficult thing to do, but the people around me make it so much easier. We like to push the ball up the court during the summer and I think that can be a valuable thing I can bring to this school season.
Indy Magic: What do you feel your role on the team will be?
BA: I feel like my role this year will definitely be more of leadership one-being a good teammate and making plays. I love to pass and get my teammates really good shots, and I think that will be useful this season.
Indy Magic: Everyone knows you can shoot the ball, what else have you been working on to improve?
BA: I’ve been working on cutting defenders off and making space over the summer, along with getting more athletic to be a better defender as well. Practicing cutting people off has helped me a lot during games getting open for a shot or helping someone else get open.
Indy Magic: What are you looking forward to the most during school ball this year?
BA: I’m looking forward to having fun with my teammates this season. We have very high goals, but I think everyone is buying in and willing to do whatever it takes to get there. My coaches sometimes tell me I need to have more fun so I’m excited to just play.
Indy Magic: What Camps or showcases did you attend this summer?
BA: I went to couple of Elite Camps over the summer: Goshen, Case Western, IPFW, and a few more showcases that were all great and I still use those drills in my current workouts.
Indy Magic: Any college visits coming up?
BA: I have a visit to Saint Mary’s College coming up very soon. I also plan on attending Macmurray College in October and Goshen sometime soon. I like Case Western Reserve and Wheaton College very much also and plan on visiting there too.
Indy Magic: Tell me about this Cardi B song you sing all the time?
BA: It’s a hype song that my friend and teammate Jhordan like, even though Coach Blanding makes fun of us for it! (He likes it too he just won’t admit it :) )
Indy Magic: There are high expectations of you this year how do you feel you will handle that kind of responsibility?
BA: I think it will definitely be a step up and challenge, but I’m up for it. My Coach and teammates have trust in me and will help me along the way, which is all I can ask for coming into this season. God has been getting me ready for it and I’m excited to step in that role.
