Junior Cup: Mountjoy United 1-2 Lisbellaw United
Sep. 13, 2015
Lisbellaw United would see off the challenge of fellow Fermanagh & Western Mountjoy at the Tyrone venue on Saturday to advance into the 2nd Round of this years Junior Cup.
Andy Reilly’s men would have to come from a goal down to do as Mountjoy made a bright opening and capitalised on some hesitance in the Lisbellaw defence to open the scoring. A long punt forward from the home ‘keeper was let bounce outside the penalty area where the lively Johnny Cresswell nipped in and lifted the ball over Matthew Quinn for 1-0.
Moments later a similar scenario arose, this time Cresswell was off target. A second scare would spark Lisbellaw into life and they played some excellent football for the remaining 30minutes of the first half.
A procession of corner kicks seen the visitors mount pressure on the hosts. A clever header back across the goals by Stuart Cochrane seen Paul McGrath head against the crossbar from 10yards, a goalmouth scramble in sued, Cochrane seeing his effort blocked on the line by a defender.
Lisbellaw would draw level on the half hour when Tiarnan Magee gathered possession 30yards from goal and ran straight at the home defence before being bundled over in the penalty area. Lee Glass dispatching the spot hit high into the net.
From the kickoff Lisbellaw won back possession with Magee who found Paul McGrath and he slipped Lee Glass through one on one, the goalkeeper sharply off his line to narrow the angle and make the save.
The second goal would arrive a few minutes later, some neat one touch play on the left seen the ball shifted to Davy Little in a central area, his through ball found Ryan Nelson on the right, Nelson’s well hit low shot across the goals nestled into the bottom corner for 2-1.
Lisbellaw were rampant at this juncture and the half time break came at a bad time. IN the second period Lisbellaw never hit the level of performance they ended the first period with. In saying this chances continued to flow, some great corner kicks from Nelson only needed a touch for a goal while Kyle McCleery stung the hands of the Mountjoy ‘keeper with a driven shot.
Ryan O’Keefe was introduced he almost netted immediately, Gareth Carrothers ball forward was flicked on by McGrath for O’Keefe who raced through and hit the inside of the post before the ball was scrambled away.
In the closing 10minutes Cresswell had two chances for the hosts, the first from a difficult angle having beaten Quinn to a loose ball while Quinn made a fine fingertip save to turn another effort around the post.
At the death a handling error by Quinn seen the ball trickle towards the goal-line before he recovered it despite claims the ball had crossed the line by the hosts as Lisbellaw ended victors on a 2-1 scoreline.
