The Lorne Park Spartans opened the 2017 regular season with a 29-0 win over the St. Marguerite d'Youville Panthers in Brampton on Friday.

Both teams struggled offensively on their first two possessions, but near the end of the first quarter the Spartans found the endzone. After being given a short field courtesy of their defense, Jakob Page took the ball in from five yards out to give Lorne Park a 7-0 lead.

The Spartans offense threatened repeatedly in the second quarter, breaking into the redzone on three occasions, but the Panthers turned them away each time with solid defensive play.  A blocked Spartans field goal attempt ended the first half with Lorne Park still in front 7-0.

The second half belonged entirely to the Spartans.  Early in the third quarter, with the Lorne Park defense still swarming, d'Youville conceded a safety to make the score 9-0.  The Panthers forced a turnover on the ensuing kickoff, but were unable to capitalize on their best starting field position of the day.  After a Ryan Gibbons interception, Jakob Page cashed in with another touchdown run from 20 yards out, and RB Frank Mensah added another on Lorne Park's next possession.  In the fourth quarter, Chris Haggart picked off a Panther pass, and QB Christian Smodis completed the scoring with a rushing touchdown of his own.

Christian Smodis was 9/17 for 125 yards.  Jakob Page had 7 carries for 98 yards and two touchdowns.  Frank Mensah had 16 runs for 145 yards and a touchdown.  Will Manko led all receivers with 4 catches for 73 yards

Around the league, the Mount Carmel Crusaders outlasted the David Suzuki Grizzlies 29-21 with a second half surge, and the St. Marcellinus Spirit kept the St. Roch Ravens out of the endzone until the game's final minute, winning 20-10.

The Spartans (1-0) travel to David Suzuki S.S. to take on the Grizzlies (0-1) next Friday at 8pm under the lights.  Student tickets will be made available at Lorne Park S.S. throughout the week with adult tickets available for purchase at the gate.
