Jan 23, 2018 - Wildfire Sweeps RSL

Madison Wildfire is establishing itself as the club to beat this season in RSL. The Wildfire High School and Middle School teams went undefeated in 5 games on Saturday, January 13 at their home rink.

Despite two days of pouring rain and near freezing temperatures the night before, the rink was dry and ready for competition, thanks to the efforts of MHL Rink Manager Dave Sisson and a crew of volunteers including a few from the visiting teams. Puck drop for the first game took place just one hour behind the original schedule, and the rest of the day flowed smoothly. The Fauquier Dragons, Ashburn Fury, Fredericksburg Phantoms, and Winchester Storm brought teams out to the MHL Rink for a fun day of competition. The Rinky Dink Café was rocking all day long, selling coffee and hot chocolate along with delicious food to keep the players and their fans in tip top shape. The AAU-sanctioned refs braved cold temps all day long with nary a complaint. The scorekeepers worked through difficulties with electronic equipment to keep games on schedule. Most importantly, the players gave their fans a lot to cheer about and had a great time battling the competition.

The day began with a contest between the Wildfire and Dragons Middle School teams. Both teams got off to a sluggish start, and it was late in the first period before the first goal was scored on a Wildfire power play by Corey to make the score 1-0. Caleb answered for the Dragons midway through the second to tie it up. With just under six minutes left in the game, Jake S. scored what turned out to be the GWG for the Wildfire. Four minutes later, he added an insurance goal, assisted by Jake J. Final: Wildfire 3, Dragons 1

The next game for Madison was a high school contest between Wildfire and the Dragons. The Dragons were missing three skilled players, Warzinski and the Fischers. Wildfire wasted no time capitalizing on the Dragons’ misfortune, scoring three goals in the first period. Two were from Ethan (assisted by Cole and Brayden) and one from Brayden (assisted by Ethan). Following intermission, Wildfire built on their lead, with two goals from Jake S. while parked at the Dragons’ back door (both set up by Ethan); one from Ryan (assisted by Cole); and one from Cole (assisted by Ethan). Final: Wildfire 7, Dragons 0

The second game of the day for the Wildfire middle school team had them facing off against Ashburn Fury. Fury is a very young team, with all players in the sixth grade. They borrowed an older player from Winchester to supplement their short bench. Although they battled hard, Fury was no match for the strength of Wildfire. Connor got the scoring started with an assist from Cole, followed by an unassisted goal from Jake S. to put Wildfire up 2-0. Jake F. answered for Fury to cut the Wildfire lead in half, but that was all the Fury offense Wildfire would allow for the rest of the game. Jake J. and Nate doubled the Wildfire lead in the first to go up 4-1 by halftime. The second period was all Wildfire, with goals coming from Cai, Jake S., Connor, and Cole. Jake J. had 2 assists and Cole had 1. Final: Wildfire 8, Fury 1

The third middle school game for Wildfire was against Fredericksburg Phantoms. Andrew was looking for an opportunity to skate with his team, so Cole went in goal for Wildfire. Wildfire built a nice lead off a goal from Jake J., 2 goals from Corey (1 assisted by Colie the goalie), and 2 from Jake S. Austin scored 1 in the first for the Phantoms, so Wildfire led 5-1 at halftime. The second period was a much closer contest, with Wildfire getting only two goals: one from Corey, assisted by Connor, and one in the final minute from Jake S. The Phantoms also had a second period goal from Cole C. Final: Wildfire 7, Phantoms 2

The last game of the day was between two high school teams, Wildfire and Storm. It looked a lot like the first high school game, with Wildfire shutting out Storm. Ethan was responsible for 5 goals against Storm, getting assists from Cole, Brayden, and Luke. Ryan had two goals, with an assist from Brayden. Brayden had a goal of his own, assisted by Luke, and Cole scored an unassisted goal. Final: Wildfire 9, Storm 0

Congratulations to the Wildfire high school and middle school teams on a fantastic day of undefeated play, and many thanks to the MHL volunteers who worked so hard to make it happen. Kudos to Wildfire goalies Mitchell, Andrew and Cole for allowing only 4 goals in 5 games.

Dec 11, 2017 - RSL HS v. Dragons & Phantoms

2018 RSL Season Opening Day Madison Wildfire got their season off to a fantastic start today with decisive victories against the Fauquier Dragons and the Fredericksburg Phantoms. Scoring was spread among all eight Wildfire skaters, with each getting at least one goal, and goaltending was superb. Even though the team is actually half high school and half middle school, the players’ passion for the game and ability to work together as a team allowed them to earn two W’s.

Dragons 3, Wildfire 8 Wildfire took control of this game from the first puckdrop and built a commanding lead during the first period. They did an excellent job of moving the puck around, maintaining possession, and getting players into scoring position. They also played a solid defense, staying tight against their opponent and backchecking to prevent shots on goal. The team passed the puck well and took advantage of rebounds to create scoring opportunities.

The Dragons and Wildfire have a history of fiercely competitive games, with both teams showcasing tremendous skill and teamwork. The Dragons, who earned the RSL Championship in 2017, were hampered today by missing players and an ankle injury that prevented one of their strongest players from showing his usual leadership on the rink. Wildfire was also missing a player and dealing with players who weren’t feeling 100%.

No doubt, future meetings of these two teams will be tight contests.

Phantoms 0, Wildfire 9 The Phantoms are a new club that is working hard to equip their teams to be competitive in RSL. They visited the Madison rink a few weeks ago for a pre-season scrimmage which ended in a lopsided victory for Wildfire. Today’s meeting showed a stronger Phantoms team with a lot of potential for future growth. However, the passing and teamwork displayed by Wildfire was too strong today for the Phantoms to overcome as Wildfire established an early lead and built on it persistently throughout the game.

Defensemen Brayden, Ethan, and Cole displayed strong leadership throughout both games, controlling the pace and setting up scoring opportunities. Luke, the only senior player on the team, had an impressive day, with excellent forechecking that landed him on the scoresheet multiple times. Forwards Ryan, Jake J., Jake S, and Corey also hammered away on both goalies, racking up goals and assists in both games. Mitchell had an excellent day in goal, making a ton of saves and flashing the leather on some nice top shelf shots.

Wildfire Coach Dave Sisson was extremely pleased with how his team performed in both games. He has expectations for a winning season for both Wildfire teams, High School and Middle School. RSL will take a break for the holidays, and games will resume on January 13.

Dec 11, 2017 - Flyers (3) v. Capitals (6)

The Flyers and the Capitals kicked off the season in style.  With Jonas and Andrew in goal, it was anyone's game!  The Flyers led the game with a goal by Ayden, but it wasn't long before the Cai helped to tie the game up with an assist from Kennan.  The teams started the second period tied 1-1.  Connor scored two goals for the Caps in the second period - with an assist from Cai, but the Flyers rebounded by tying it up with goals from Ayden and Lorelei.   In the third period, the Caps dominated with a goal from Annie two more from Connor - his first hat trick of the season.  The final score was 3-6, but it was a well played game from both teams.  It was no doubt that Robbie, Silas, and Madeline helped the Flyers hold their own.  Cole and Selah were an integral part of the Capital's win.

Dec 3, 2017 - Wolverines (12) v. Bruins (7)

The Bruins started off the first game of the season with a goal from Ryan.  The Wolverines fought back by scoring two goals by Brayden and an assist by Jacob. The lead was short-lived though, with a goal from Cole.  Jacob finished off the period with a Wolverine goal. (End of Period Score: Wolverines 3, Bruins 2)

In the second period, the Wolverines brought their game with consiecutive goals from Brayden, Jacob, Corey, and two more from Jacob.  The Bruins had some catching up to do, so Ryan scored two consecutive goals.  The second period was finished by the Caps scoring two more goals from Corey and Brayden.  (End of Period Score: Wolverines 10, Bruins 4)

The Wolverines started off the third period with a goal by Colt, but the Bruins dominated the third period, overall. Cole scored two goals for the Bruins and Ryan scored the third.  Jacbo scored his fifth goal of the game!

Dec 3, 2017 - Ducks (6) v Penguins (5)

What a great way to open the season!  Our Instructional League players were pumped and ready to show their stuff.  It was a tight game with a lot of back and forth action.  The Ducks started off the game with the first goal made by Quinlan.  But it wasn't long befor the Penguins tied the game with a goal by Ryan.  The play was fierce and each player contributed to their team's success!

For the Ducks, Quinlan got a hat trick (three goals) in his very first game of the season!  Other scorers for the Ducks were Trey and Thomas.  Will is one of our youngest players, just learning to skate, and the crowd went wild when he put the puck in the net!  Josh got an assist to one of Quinlan's goals.  Kieth and Jacob were key players in helping their team win!

The Penguins started the season strong, with two goals each from Ryan and Lexi.  Pace also scored for the team.  Although there were no "official" assists on the books for the Penguins, it was clear that Lilly, Annabelle, Gage, and Henry helped move the puck to where it needed to be.
