The JV Mavericks are off to a great start in their own right. With wins over Hillcrest, Wade Hampton, Byrnes and Spartanburg, the Mavs are 4-0 on the young season. Pitching and defense have steadily improved, and if the Mavs continue to improve at the plate, it could be a great week for these youngsters. JV has home games against Boiling Springs and Dorman on Tuesday and Friday and a road match-up with Wade Hampton on Wednesday before being off for Spring Break.
As of Monday, March 25, the Mauldin Mavs are off to a great start in 2013. They are 8-3 overall with an unblemished 5-0 Region II record with wins over Wade Hampton (3-1), Gaffney (9-8), Riverside (6-4), Byrnes (10-0) and Spartanburg (12-2). Mauldin will be put to a tremendous test this week with region games against Boiling Springs (home) 3/26, Wade Hampton (away) 3/27 and Dorman (home) 3/29.
Senior Cory Thompson has been the catylist on the mound with a 3-0 record, .39 ERA and an opponents average against at a miniscule .119. Thompson has punched out 24 in 18 IP and surrendured only 7 hits. The South Carolina signee is hitting .406 with 2 HR, 7 RBI, 8 BB and 5 SB.
Junior Cory Bynum leads with Mavs in hitting at a .464 clip, while Freshman Grant Bodison sits at .438 and Senior Grayson Godino is third on the club at .424. Senior Spencer Peay has been a steady influnece on the pitching staff, and has thrown out 6 of 13 potential base runners for CCS of 46%. The three year starter is also hitting .364. Junior south-paw Daniel Johnson has come back strong from a broken wrist in 2 starts on the mound going 2-0 with wins over AC Flora and Spartanburg. The left-hander has an ERA of .58, 12 K's in 12 IP and opponents are hitting .217.
