The (almost) magnificent seven
Only seven Misfits regulars were able to make the journey to Taplow on Sunday, but with the help of a couple of first-timers and a guest player we put up a gallant performance before succumbing to a 36-run defeat. With only 10 men to cover a big ground for the best part of three hours on the hottest day of the year, the effort in the field was absolutely outstanding, keeping Taplow down to 190 for 8 declared off 48 overs. Debutant Dave Goodman barely bowled a bad ball in marathon 18-over spell of off-spin and fully deserved his five-wicket haul. He must have been bowling well if I managed to get a couple of stumpings! Lee gave his usual big-hearted effort over three spells and was even excused his exuberant celebrations when he grabbed his third wicket by bowling the Taplow opener for 99 off what proved to the final ball before the declaration. Freddie, Alan and Bob Lambert gave accurate support and our fielding never flagged in the heat. Despite always being up with the required run rate, we fell short in the run chase. Several of our top order got a start -- James, 11, me 13, Bob 14 and Tom (guest player from Taplow) 23 -- but no one was able to stick around long enough with Freddie, who batted beautifully for an unbeaten 65. The way he farmed the strike and worked with the tail at the end meant we were never completely out of the game until the final wicket fell at 154. Overall, a performance we can take great heart from and one which is not reflected by the final score. Thanks to all for making skippering such an enjoyable experience. Guy, it's yours again for Little Kingshill next week -- the first win of the season is not far away. David Tossell
