Down Goliad 32-7: Pirates Nail Down 4th Consecutive District Flag
Nov. 9, 2011
The Sinton Pirates put the last bit of icing on the cake for the 2011 grid season last Friday night in Goliad.
They dominated the hosting Tigers in the season finale, 32-7.
It was the fourth consecutive outright title for Coach Tom Allen's program. With the results of the games, Ingleside and Rockport-Fulton, the other teams make the playoffs, Sinton moves to post season play in Division II to face the Sweeny Bulldogs Saturday night in Victoria.
"Goliad came out to play really hard," Coach Tom Allen said. "We made a couple of critical errors- two turnovers- which didn't help matters much, but we played a pretty clean game.
"Derek Shedd made some big catches for us, and Tyler Handson threw the ball real well which was a big positive," he added.
The Pirates managed to crack the scoreboard first, but only because of a turnover.
Goliad had moved the ball downfield but fumbled at the Pirate 5-yard line which the Pirates recovered.
Sinton took possession there and handly drove the entire distance of the field for the first score. Tyler Handson capped that march with a 10-yard touchdown run with 4:32 to go in the opening quarter putting the Pirates up 6-0.
Sinton's second touchdown set up with great field position when the Tigers attempted a fake punt with a pass play that fell incomplete at their own 48.
It took just two plays for the locals to add to their total on the back of John Guzman, a 43-yard bolt, followed by a 5-yard jaunt for the TD was followed by a DeRick Castro extra point kick to put things at 13-0 with :32 showing on the first quarter clock.
Goliad took the ensuing kickoff and began what would be their only scoring drive of the night at the 39.
But this was a continuation of the first miscue that kept things close. Goliad had been stopped, and the defense forced a punt . The ball accidentally hit a Pirate creating a live ball situation which the Tigers capitalized on at the Sinton 31.
In eight plays, the hosts' Tommy Williams capped the scoring with a 3-yard run. Colby Berger's kick narrowed the game to 13-7.
Late in the second quarter, Sinton would get an insurance touchdown to create more daylight between the two when Tyler Handson hit Derek Shedd on a 31-yard TD pass and run, Castro's P.A.T. would be no good leaving things at 19-7 with 1:11 left.
This would be the score at intermission.
The Pirates would receive the second half kickoff, but could not create any consistency on this first possession.
Forced to punt, the Tigers took Castro's boot at their 24 yard line, In five plays, Goliad went back to punt again, and tried another fake . This time the pass was intercepted by Tracker Conn at the 47.
The Pirates would capitalize for yet another six following this turnover.
In seven plays, Derek Shedd got into the mix again with his teammate Handson, Handson hit Shedd for the final 13 yards and a score with 3:23 left in the third quarter, Again Castro misfired on the point after, leaving the count at 25-7 Sinton.
Goliad's next possession would carry into the fourth quarter, but the Tiger offense did sustain a drive that would carry to the Pirate 20 before the defense stiffened.
Following that series, it took Sinton 10 plays to score that final TD, but more importantly this possession ate up most of the remainder of the time in the final quarter.
Going back to what had worked all night, Handson hit Shedd for yet another score, this time from 22-yards out with 4:32 left, Corey Ring came on to make the final P.A,T. for a score of 32-7
