The Toledo Women's Celtics Rugby team was restarted by Izzy Robinson in January 2015. Previous incarnations of the team existed from 2002-2006. Why the Celtics? It's a shoutout to the Toledo Men's Rugby team, which was founded in 1974. Women's rugby is played the same way as Men's rugby, there are no rule modifications. Matches are typically teams of 15 playing 40 minute halves. Points are scored by either touching the ball down on the other teams goal area (called a "try"), or kicking the ball through the uprights.
Rugby is played with minimal equipment, typically just cleats and a mouth guard. Many players also wear rugby shorts as well, which are special heavy duty shorts to prevent ripping. If you are thinking of playing rugby, we invite you to our practices, which are currently Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm and Saturdays 11am-1pm. Players are asked to try to attend a minimum of 6 practices a month. You do not need cleats or a mouth guard for your first couple practices, sneakers and workout clothing will be fine. If you decide to play, you will need to purchase a mouth guard and cleats. Most players wear firm-ground soccer cleats.
Rugby is a sport that celebrates all body types. If you are thinking about playing rugby, just do it! No experience necessary.
